The Traditional Texas Tint Exemption Process

Unlike some states, Texas does not have a specific state-issued DMV exemption form. Instead, §547.613(c) requires a licensed physician's written certificationthat darker tint is medically necessary. Here's how the traditional process works:

1

Schedule a Doctor Appointment

Find a licensed Texas physician willing to evaluate you for a tint medical exemption. Many PCPs and specialists are unfamiliar with the process and may decline — this is the most common roadblock.

2

In-Person Medical Evaluation

The physician must review your medical condition and determine that darker window tint is medically necessary. They need to provide a written statement certifying this under §547.613(c).

3

Obtain Written Certification

The physician’s letter must include your name, their medical license number, the qualifying condition, a statement of medical necessity, and their signature. There is no standardized state form — the format is at the physician’s discretion.

4

Keep Documentation in Your Vehicle

Texas does not require registration with DPS or any state agency. Keep the physician’s certification in your vehicle for traffic stops and present it at annual safety inspections. No compliance sticker is needed.

What Must the Physician's Certification Include?

Since Texas doesn't have a standardized form, the physician's written certification must contain specific elements to be legally valid:

Patient Information

  • Full legal name
  • Date of birth
  • Texas address
  • Driver’s license number
  • Vehicle information (recommended)
  • Windows requiring exemption

Physician Certification

  • Physician’s full name and credentials
  • Texas medical license number
  • Practice address and phone
  • Qualifying medical condition
  • Statement of medical necessity under §547.613(c)
  • Physician signature and date

Why Most Texas Doctors Won't Sign Tint Exemptions

Most Texas PCPs and specialists are unfamiliar with §547.613(c) and decline to write tint exemption certifications. This isn't because you don't qualify — it's because the process falls outside their typical practice. Our licensed Texas physicians specialize in reviewing existing medical documentation against the state's exemption requirements.
